Open Letter to the President of the Free University Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin), Prof. Dr. Dieter Lenzen, Concerning the Appointment of Dr. Albert Scharenberg

>>to the German Version

Dear Mr. President, dear colleague,

We are writing this letter in a seemingly rather secondary matter, which, however, proves to be symptomatic and worrisome in more general terms. Without need, you are doing a disservice to “your” university and its much-acclaimed “excellence”. Or, as we would still prefer to write, you seem to act in this way. We refuse to believe that you are willing to violate the standards of academic quality as well as the liberal spirit of the Free University, which you as president preside over.

In May this year, after long delay, vice-president Hempfer – certainly in your name and with your knowledge – notified the chairwoman of the John F. Kennedy Institute’s search committee, colleague Prof. Margit Mayer, that you did not forward the committee’s list of choice concerning the position of Assistant Professor of North American Politics to the responsible minister of the State of Berlin, Prof. Dr. E. Juergen Zoellner. You refrained from the otherwise customary practice to forward a diligently and competently prepared proposal for two reasons: First, the proposed top candidate Dr. Albert Scharenberg is allegedly too old (Scharenberg had just turned 42 years of age). Second, he is reputedly not sufficiently qualified.

However, there can be no doubt that concerning North America, its history and current politics, Dr. Albert Scharenberg in every respect possesses great and distinguished competence, which has also been recognized by colleagues in the United States and Canada. It would do harm to the Free University’s research, teaching and outside representation if Albert Scharenberg did not get appointed because of the university's own fault. The first argument concerning the candidate’s age is not cogent for various reasons. In comparable cases, the argument that a candidate for an assistant professorship has passed the age of 40 was – also at the Free University – no reason to block the appointment. In addition, Albert Scharenberg commands an exceptional depth of knowledge that could be of great use for North American Studies at the Free University.

Though issues related to appointment cases usually – and for good reasons – are not dealt with in public, we write this letter because of the rumor that has come to our – and certainly also to your – attention, concerning your allegedly “true” motifs not to forward the list headed by Scharenberg (see the reports in “Spiegel Online”, “Berliner Zeitung”, “Berliner Morgenpost” et al.). We write to you deeply concerned about academic freedom which research and teaching at the Free University, already in its name and logo, proudly claim. To us, the mere idea that political antipathy – i.e., the fact that Dr. Albert Scharenberg is also a member of the board of trustees of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation – might have played a decisive role in this case seems to be entirely incompatible with the university’s claim of excellence and liberal spirit. And it would certainly be devastating for the Free University if the impression solidifies that professors here are appointed according to political attitude.

Because we know we are at one with you in our quest to avert damage from the FU, because we refuse to believe that you are doing harm not primarily to the person Dr. Albert Scharenberg, but to North American Studies research and teaching at the FU for petty, even political objections, we appeal to you to rectify your office’s mistake.

Hoping that you – despite all differences – care for the Free University as much as we do,

we remain in collegial spirit,
