Against the backdrop of global discussions in international fora such as the OECD, the G20 and the UN, this study was commissioned in 2024 to support an informed debate. It consists of two volumes. The first volume provides a comprehensive overview across five categories of taxes, surveying academic literature in both EU and non-EU countries  and mapping the existing wealth-related tax regimes in EU Member States.

Wesentliche CO2-Einsparungen kommen durch die Substitution von Pkw-Fahrten zustande. Der Umwelteffekt des Tickets entspricht einer Reduktion der Emissionen durch den privaten Pkw-Verkehr um etwa drei Prozent.

Official development assistance (ODA) by Development Assistance Committee (DAC) members and associates amounted to USD 174.3 billion in 2025, a 23.1% decrease over 2024. Abundance and diversity regained more than 90% and composition approximately 75% similarity to old-growth forests within 30 years, but full recovery takes several decades. Mobile animal communities acting as seed dispersers or pollinators had high resistance levels and recovered faster than trees or tree seedlings. Return rates contributed 1–2.5 times more than resistance to the recovery times of species composition. Taxon-specific recovery times could not be explained by simple mechanisms (life-history strategies, trophic level or mobility). We show the enormous potential of protecting naturally recovering secondary forests to stop and reverse biodiversity losses.

Extreme events around the world, including intense heat, heavy rainfall and tropical cyclones, caused disruption and devastation and highlighted the vulnerability of our inter-connected economies and societies.

The report, Breathe better: How leading cities have rapidly cut air pollution, examined air quality trends, identifying 19 leading cities that achieved sustained reductions of at least 20% in both fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over 15 years. Yet the report demonstrates that substantial progress is feasible: cities that took coordinated action achieved reductions in toxic pollutants above 20% between 2010 and 2024, with some achieving reductions of around 45%.

Unsere europäischen Windkraftanlagenhersteller sind globale Kraftpakete. Sie exportieren Hightech „Made in Europe“ in die ganze Welt. Bei der Kernenergie sieht das leider etwas anders aus. Während 1990 ein Drittel des europäischen Stroms aus Kernenergie stammte, sind es heute nur noch knapp 15 %. Diese Verringerung des Anteils der Kernenergie war eine bewusste Entscheidung, und ich glaube, dass es für Europa ein strategischer Fehler war, einer zuverlässigen, bezahlbaren Quelle für emissionsarmen Strom den Rücken zu kehren.

Antarctic sea ice has likely reached its minimum extent for the year, at 2.58 million square kilometers (996,000 square miles) on February 26, 2026, according to scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado Boulder. The 2026 minimum ranks sixteenth lowest in the 48-year satellite record. This year’s minimum is much closer to average than the past four years, albeit still 260,000 square kilometers (100,000 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average.

Recent record-hot years have caused discussion over whether global warming has accelerated. Previous analysis found acceleration (i.e., increase in warming rate) has not yet reached a 95% confidence level, given natural temperature variability. We remove the estimated influence of three main natural variability factors: El Niño, volcanism, and solar variation. The resulting adjusted and thus less “noisy” data show that there has been acceleration with over 98% confidence, with faster warming over the last 10+ years than during any previous decade.

Durch die massiv gestiegenen Eigenanteile in stationären Pflegeeinrichtungen sind immer mehr Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner auf unterstützende Sozialhilfeleistungen angewiesen. Die Sozialhilfequote in Pflegeheimen erreicht 2026 den neuen Höchstwert von 37 Prozent. Ohne Reformen könnten die Belastungen der Pflegebedürftigen bis zum Jahr 2035 ungebremst auf knapp 43 Prozent ansteigen.

Ihre Liquidierung ist innerhalb der nächsten 1 bis 2 Jahre real möglich, wenn nicht sogar wahrscheinlich, wenn wir nicht in der Lage sein sollten, dem Erstarken faschistischer Kräfte wie der AfD und dem Rechtsruck der Bundesregierung wirksam entgegenzutreten.
