»Der weltweite Absatz von elektrischen LKW und Bussen hat sich im vergangenen Jahr fast verdoppelt«

Studie vom ICCT, 19.8.2026 (engl. Original)

The composition of ZE sales varied sharply by country in 2025. China’s 457,300 ZE-MHDV sales were dominated by heavy- and medium-duty trucks, with buses contributing just 11% of sales. In the United States, medium-duty trucks accounted for over 90% of ZE-MHDV sales, while buses and heavy-duty trucks each represented about 3–4%. Excluding both China and the United States, the ZE-MHDV market in India and Brazil remained predominantly driven by buses and coaches, which accounted for over half of sales across these regions, while sales of ZE medium- and heavy-duty trucks remained minimal.

The vehicle category composition of global ZE-MHDV sales shifted from buses to trucks between 2020 and 2025, driven largely by rapid growth in China’s truck categories. Buses and coaches accounted for 80% of ZE-MHDV sales in 2020, reflecting the early concentration of electrification in urban transit. By 2022, combined medium- and heavy-duty truck sales exceeded bus sales for the first time, and the gap widened rapidly thereafter. Heavy-duty truck volumes more than doubled from 2024 to 2025, reaching nearly 240,000 units, making heavy-duty trucks the single largest ZE-MHDV category globally. By 2025, trucks together represented 86% of all ZE-MHDV sales, up from just 20% in 2020.
