And their brave resistance is part of a larger fight for an essential democratic principles that unite all free people: the rule of law; free and fair elections; the freedom to speak, to write, and to assemble; the freedom to worship as one chooses; freedom of the press.

As the shocking events of the past three weeks have emphasised, privacy and safety are mutually reinforcing rights. People under attack depend on privacy-preserving technologies to communicate with journalists, to coordinate protection for their families, and to fight for their safety and rights. Equally in peacetime, people’s ability to communicate without unjustified intrusion - whether online or offline - is vital for their rights and freedoms, as well as for the development of vibrant and secure communities, civil society and industry.

I know that your government has told you this is a war to de-Nazify Ukraine. This is not true. De-Nazify Ukraine? It is a country with a Jewish president — a Jewish president, I might add, whose grandfather’s three brothers were all murdered by the Nazis. Ukraine did not start this war. Neither did nationalists or Nazis. Those in power in the Kremlin started this war; this is not the Russian people’s war.

The Court concludes from all of the above considerations that the conditions required by its Statute for it to indicate provisional measures are met. Global CO2 emissions from energy combustion and industrial processes1 rebounded in 2021 to reach their highest ever annual level. The resilience of the Amazon rainforest to climate and land-use change is crucial for biodiversity, regional climate and the global carbon cycle. Deforestation and climate change, via increasing dry-season length and drought frequency, may already have pushed the Amazon close to a critical threshold of rainforest dieback. Here, we quantify changes of Amazon resilience by applying established indicators (for example, measuring lag-1 autocorrelation) to remotely sensed vegetation data with a focus on vegetation optical depth (1991–2016).

Nach der Annexion der Krim 2014 handelt es sich um eine neuerliche Verletzung der europäischen Friedensordnung. In einer einstündigen Rede hat der russische Präsident dabei sein Geschichtsbild erläutert und die Beweggründe seiner aktuellen Ukrainepolitik offengelegt.

Today the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of Ukraine has been effected. Kenya is gravely concerned by the announcement made by the Russian Federation to recognize the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine as independent States. In our considered view, that action and announcement breach the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

It should be noted that Ukraine actually never had stable traditions of real statehood. And, therefore, in 1991 it opted for mindlessly emulating foreign models, which have no relation to history or Ukrainian realities. Der Bericht, den die UN-Organisation unter dem Titel „Die Rolle nicht-staatlicher Akteure in der Bildung“ am 10. Dezember vorgelegt hat, präsentiert fünf Empfehlungen für qualitativ hochwertige Bildung für alle Menschen.

Dass Sie mir dieses Amt für weitere fünf Jahre anvertrauen, bewegt mich sehr. Es ist mir eine Ehre, eine Freude. Meine Freude aber wäre größer, wenn die Bundesversammlung unter anderen Bedingungen stattfinden könnte, ohne die Beschränkungen der Pandemie. Aber wichtiger noch: Meine Freude wäre größer, wenn unsere Bundesversammlung nicht in eine Zeit der Sorge fiele, Sorge um den Frieden in Europa.

Der Präsident der Französischen Republik, der Präsident der Republik Polen und der Bundeskanzler der Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind am 8. Februar 2022 in Berlin zusammengekommen.

A new report commissioned by WWF provides the most comprehensive account to date of the extent to which plastic pollution is affecting the global ocean, the impacts it’s having on marine species and ecosystems, and how these trends are likely to develop in future. The report by researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) reveals a serious and rapidly worsening situation that demands immediate and concerted international action:

The sides share the understanding that democracy is a universal human value, rather than a privilege of a limited number of States, and that its promotion and protection is a common responsibility of the entire world community.
