Around the world, forests and other natural ecosystems like grasslands, wetlands and savannahs continue to be destroyed at an alarming rate. In der Corona-Krise ist das Vertrauen der deutschen Bevölkerung in die Medien gestiegen. Zugleich ist der Anteil derjenigen gesunken, die den Medien vorwerfen, die Bevölkerung systematisch zu belügen. Das zeigen repräsentative Befunde der Langzeitstudie „Medienvertrauen“, die am Institut für Publizistik der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz und am Institut für Sozialwissenschaften der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf durchgeführt wird. Die Telefon-Umfrage fand im November und Dezember 2020 statt. Befragt wurden 1.207 Bürgerinnen und Bürger ab 18 Jahren.

Die Menschenrechtslage hat sich in der Covid-19-Krise für Millionen von Menschen unmittelbar oder mittelbar verschlechtert. In vielen Teilen der Welt verstärkten die Pandemie und ihre Folgen im letzten Jahr die Auswirkungen von Ungleichheit, Diskriminierung und Unterdrückung. Besonders vulnerable Gruppen wie vorerkrankte Menschen, Geflüchtete und Beschäftigte im Gesundheitswesen, Minderheiten sowie Frauen und Mädchen litten am stärksten unter der Pandemie.

Am Freitag, den 25. März, hat in Fukushima, der durch die Atomkatastrophe weltbekannt gewordenen Region in Japan, der olympische Fackellauf begonnen, mit viel Tamtam und Jubelgeschrei. Fukushima wird als Symbol des aus der dreifachen Katastrophe wieder auferstandenen Japan missbraucht. Denn auch jetzt noch sieht man überall in den Dörfern und Städten von Fukushima Ruinen und Elend, hie und da auch ein gut restauriertes Bahnhofsviertel. COVID-19 has exposed and exacerbated preexisting inequalities in incomes and access to basic public services, such as health care and vaccination, both within and across countries. Disruptions to education threaten social mobility by leaving longlasting effects on children and youth, especially those from poorer households. These challenges are being compounded by accelerated digitalization and the transformational effect of the pandemic on the economy, posing lowskilled workers with difficulties in finding employment.

2020 was meant to be a landmark year in the fight against deforestation – a year by which many companies, countries and international organizations had pledged to halve or completely stop forest loss. Continued losses of primary tropical forests make it clear that humanity has fallen short in meeting these targets.

In May 2020, the World Health Assembly in resolution WHA73.1 requested the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) to continue to work closely with the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and countries, as part of the One Health approach, to identify the zoonotic source of the virus and the route of introduction to the human population, including the possible role of intermediate hosts.

We, the undersigned, present the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism, the product of an initiative that originated in Jerusalem. We include in our number international scholars working in Antisemitism Studies and related fields, including Jewish, Holocaust, Israel, Palestine, and Middle East Studies. The text of the Declaration has benefited from consultation with legal scholars and members of civil society.

Es handelt sich um Sachverhalte, die für die deutsche Öffentlichkeit relevant sind, über die aber bislang in Presse, Funk, Fernsehen und Internet kaum Debatten geführt werden.

1) Gewollt und nicht gekonnt: Was bringt das neue Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz wirklich?

Deforestation is a major cause of biodiversity loss with a negative impact on human health. This study explores at global scale whether the loss and gain of forest cover and the rise of oil palm plantations can promote outbreaks of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. Taking into account the human population growth, we find that the increases in outbreaks of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases from 1990 to 2016 are linked with deforestation, mostly in tropical countries, and with reforestation, mostly in temperate countries.

Der Klimawandel führt zu weniger Wasser und schlechterer Wasserqualität. Im Gegenzug wirkt nachhaltiges Wassermanagement dem Klimawandel positiv entgegen.

Die Friedensorganisationen IPPNW und DFG-VK fordern die Bundestagsabgeordneten auf, die weitere Entwicklung einer bewaffnungsfähigen Eurodrohne abzulehnen. Mit Blick auf den Bergkarabach-Krieg hat Verteidigungsministerin Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer die Ausrüstung der NATO mit Drohnen und Drohnenabwehrsystemen gefordert. Am 24. März 2021 soll der Haushaltsausschuss des Bundestags im Rahmen einer 25-Millionen-Vorlage über die weitere Entwicklung einer bewaffnungsfähigen Eurodrohne entscheiden, ein gemeinsames Projekt von Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien und Spanien.

The 18th of March 2021 will mark five years since the announcement of the “EU-Turkey Statement”, under which EU and Turkish leaders agreed, among other things, that asylum seekers crossing from Turkey into Greek islands will be returned to Turkey. The statement led Greece to implement an array of laws and policies, designed to restrict the movement of asylum seekers, keep them in the designated “hotspots” on the islands (later named ‘Reception and Identification Centres”), and facilitate their readmission to Turkey.

Wer in Deutschland einmal unter die Armutsgrenze rutscht, bleibt immer öfter länger arm. So beträgt der Anteil dauerhaft von Armut bedrohter Menschen an allen Armen 44 % – und ist damit mehr als doppelt so hoch wie noch 1998. Zudem droht die Corona-Pandemie die finanzielle Situation benachteiligter Gruppen zu verschärfen: Auch wenn höhere Einkommensgruppen im ersten Lockdown häufiger Einkommenseinbußen hatten, kämpften neben Selbstständigen besonders Menschen mit niedrigen Einkommen, Geringqualifizierte und Alleinerziehende mit finanziellen Schwierigkeiten.

Violence against women remains devastatingly pervasive and starts alarmingly young, shows new data from WHO and partners. Across their lifetime, 1 in 3 women, around 736 million, are subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence from a non-partner – a number that has remained largely unchanged over the past decade.

This violence starts early: 1 in 4 young women (aged 15-24 years) who have been in a relationship will have already experienced violence by an intimate partner by the time they reach their mid-twenties.
