This week, the UN will serve as host to an unproductive and ill-timed conference on the two-state solution in New York City. This is a publicity stunt that comes in the middle of delicate diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Far from promoting peace, the conference will prolong the war, embolden Hamas, and reward its obstruction and undermine real-world efforts to achieve peace.

Die Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (GFF) hat heute Verfassungsbeschwerde gegen systematische polizeiliche Datenanalysen in Bayern erhoben. Das Bayerische Polizeiaufgabengesetz (BayPAG) erlaubt der Polizei sogenanntes „Data Mining“. Dabei wertet das Programm „VeRA“ auf Basis der Überwachungssoftware Gotham von Palantir riesige Datenmengen aus und stellt Verbindungen her – auch zu Personen, die in keinem Zusammenhang mit Straftaten stehen.

The Court observes that the remedy of restitution, which involves the re-establishment of the situation that existed before the wrongful act was committed, may prove difficult or unfeasible in the case of environmental harm, since such harm is often not easily reversible. Nonetheless, the Court considers that, in the circumstances of climate change caused by emissions of GHGs, restitution may take the form of reconstructing damaged or destroyed infrastructure, and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity. Whether or not these special forms of restitution are appropriate as reparation for damage suffered by States in relation to climate change is to be determined on a case-by-case basis. Such determinations cannot be made in the abstract.

Dieser Umgang ist geeignet, die Kandidatin, die beteiligten Institutionen und mittelfristig über den Verfall der angemessenen Umgangskultur die gesamte demokratische Ordnung zu beschädigen.

Today, U.S. Senator Rand Paul released the Committee’s final report regarding what can only be described as stunning failures by the United States Secret Service (USSS) that allowed then-former President Donald J. Trump to be shot on July 13, 2024, in an attempted assassination in Butler, Pennsylvania. This report reveals a disturbing pattern of communication failures and negligence that culminated in a preventable tragedy. What happened was inexcusable and the consequences imposed for the failures so far do not reflect the severity of the situation.

Deutlich einhelliger als die Staatenwelt erscheint die Reaktion der völkerrechtlichen community auf die israelische Militäroperation – die ganz überwiegende Zahl der Völkerrechtler hält die Kriterien für das Vorliegen einer Selbstverteidigungslage nach Art. 51 VN-Charta für nicht erfüllt. Die Schwierigkeit einer völkerrechtlichen Bewertung dieser Militäroperation besteht darin, auf der Grundlage nicht vollumfänglich verifizierbarer Fakten (etwa über den Stand des iranischen Atomprogramms) eine Bedrohungslage zu vermessen, ihre Bestandteile (Grad der Urananreicherung, Drohungen gegen Israel etc.) zu bewerten und unter das Kriterium der „Unmittelbarkeit“ (imminency) – der Dreh- und Angelpunkt für die Selbstverteidigungslage nach Art. 51 VN-Charta – zu subsumieren. Israel hätte darlegen (und beweisen) müssen, dass der Iran ad 1) unmittelbar davorstand, Atomwaffen zu bauen (capability) – die Herstellung von ausreichend spaltbarem Material im Rahmen des iranischen Atomprogramm ist dabei nur ein notwendiger Zwischenschritt; dass die iranische Führung ad 2) fest dazu entschlossen war (intent), diese Waffen gegen Israel einzusetzen und dass die Militäroperation Rising Lion ad 3) die „letzte Gelegenheit“ gewesen ist, um einen Einsatz des Iran mit Atomwaffen zu vereiteln (last window of opportunity).

For decades, the surface of the polar Southern Ocean (south of 50°S) has been freshening—an expected response to a warming climate. This freshening enhanced upper-ocean stratification, reducing the upward transport of subsurface heat and possibly contributing to sea ice expansion. It also limited the formation of open-ocean polynyas. Using satellite observations, we reveal a marked increase in surface salinity across the circumpolar Southern Ocean since 2015. This shift has weakened upper-ocean stratification, coinciding with a dramatic decline in Antarctic sea ice coverage. Additionally, rising salinity facilitated the reemergence of the Maud Rise polynya in the Weddell Sea, a phenomenon last observed in the mid-1970s. Crucially, we demonstrate that satellites can now monitor these changes in real time, providing essential evidence of the Southern Ocean’s potential transition toward persistently reduced sea ice coverage.

We, the undersigned human rights and legal organizations, are extremely concerned with the recent replacement of impartial United Nations (“UN”) agencies and well-established humanitarian organizations with the newly-created Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (“GHF”), which is working in collaboration with the Israel government and U.S. private military and security companies (“PMSC”) in the famine-struck occupied Gaza Strip.

We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel. We also affirm the importance of the protection of civilians. Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror.

The era of nuclear weapons reductions appears to have ended. Bilateral nuclear arms control between Russia and the USA entered crisis some years ago and is now almost over. Revitalized national debates in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia about nuclear status and strategy suggest there is some potential for more states to join the nuclear club. The signs are that a new qualitative nuclear arms race is gearing up and, compared with the last one, the risks are likely to be more d verse and more serious.

The number of people forced to flee persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations and events seriously disturbing public order rose in 2024, reaching a record 123.2 million. This is an increase of 7 million people or 6 per cent compared to the end of 2023. One in 67 people globally were forcibly displaced at the end of 2024. Slightly more than one-third of all forcibly displaced people globally were Sudanese (14.3 million), Syrian (13.5 million), Afghan (10.3 million) or Ukrainian (8.8 million).

Governments are at a pivotal point in addressing climate change. Over the past decade, climate action has gained momentum and unlocked economic opportunities. Clean energy now attracts twice the investment of fossil fuels, delivering affordable climate solutions, innovation, jobs, and growth. Many countries have successfully decoupled emissions from economic growth.
 

Wie im Wahlkampf angekündigt, hat die Bundesregierung unter dem CSU-Innenminister Dobrindt die Bundespolizei mit der Zurückweisung Schutzsuchender an den deutschen Außengrenzen beauftragt. Diese Praxis ist rechtswidrig. Das stellen die Beschlüsse der 6. Kammer des Berliner Verwaltungsgerichts bezüglich der Klagen dreier Schutzsuchender somalischer Herkunft am Grenzübergang Frankfurt/Oder klar. Die Zurückweisungspolitik der Bundesregierung ist nicht mit geltendem Recht vereinbar.

As this report is published, around the world, the leaders of many countries, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, have embraced a renewed militarism, as evidenced by a historic surge in military spending. Nuclear weapons spending by the nine nuclear-armed states has grown to over $100 billion in 2024, while commentators in some nuclear-armed countries have discussed developing nuclear weapons and a handful of leaders have suggested taking part in new nuclear sharing arrangements.

At present, law enforcement authorities from the City and County of Los Angeles are safeguarding public safety, and, as demonstrated by the robust law enforcement response yesterday evening to protect federal facilities, local law enforcement resources are sufficient to maintain order. In dynamic and fluid situations such as the one in Los Angeles, State and local authorities are the most appropriate ones to evaluate the need for resources to safeguard life and property.

Es braucht konkrete Maßnahmen für:

1. Bessere Versorgung – Kompetenzzentren und Ambulanzen; Einrichtung interdisziplinärer Zentren mit adäquater stationärer Aufnahme (Berücksichtigung von
PEM, Reizempfindlichkeit usw.) sowie Telemedizin!
2. besondere Berücksichtigung der Versorgung von Schwer- und Schwerstbetroffenen!
3. Schulung von Ärzt:innen und Pflegekräften – ME/CFS gehört obligatorisch ins Studium, in Aus- und Fortbildungen!
4. Aufklärung – eine BZgA-Kampagne für ME/CFS!
5. Umsetzung des Menschenrechts auf medikamentöse Versorgung – Off-Label-Therapien auch für ME/CFS-Betroffene mit Kassenübernahme!
6. Medikamentenforschung fördern und die Zulassung bereits bestehender Medikamente (bspw. Uplizna) beschleunigen (in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bundesministerium für Forschung, ähnlich dem beschleunigten Zulassungsverfahren der COVID-19-Impfung)!
7. Förderung weiterer biomedizinischer Forschung zum Pathomechanismus sowie die Anerkennung bereits bestehender biomedizinischer Forschung
8. Sozialrechtliche Anerkennung – PEM in alle Gutachterrichtlinien! ME/CFS in die Versorgungsmedizinverordnung für einen angemessenen GdB!
9. Schutz von Betroffenen und pflegenden Angehörigen vor Diskriminierung und anderen Formen struktureller Gewalt auf allen gesellschaftlichen Ebenen!
