This joint report builds on the data collected by IOM, MMC and the UNHCR during the period from January 2020 to March 2023. It is a new iteration of a joint UNHCR and MMC report issued in 2020 covering the period 2018–2019. Its main purpose is to identify and map risks, as well as draw attention to the serious violations of human rights and abuses experienced by people moving in search of safety or a better life. Based on the mapping, the report serves to further develop and improve the vastly insufficient or non-existing programmatic response to the problem faced by those on the move along the Central Mediterranean route.

At the start of 2024, nine states—the United States, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea) and Israel—together possessed approximately 12121 nuclear weapons, of which 9585 were considered to be potentially operationally available. An estimated 3904 of these warheads were deployed with operational forces, including about 2100 that were kept in a state of high operational alert—about 100 more than the previous year.

In this Open Letter, science associations and networks across Europe hereby express our grave concern over a series of decisions, taken by European decision-makers, that undermine the EU’s environmental agenda and its international obligations. We note that these attacks on the Green Deal jeopardise nature, and risk the future of EU citizens. 

The science community regards these decisions as poorly justified and dangerous, rolling back environmental standards and regulations, some of which are the result of decades of efforts and strongly supported by science and society.

We are current and former employees at frontier AI companies, and we believe in the potential of AI technology to deliver unprecedented benefits to humanity.

We also understand the serious risks posed by these technologies. These risks range from the further entrenchment of existing inequalities, to manipulation and misinformation, to the loss of control of autonomous AI systems potentially resulting in human extinction. AI companies themselves have acknowledged these risks, as have governments across the world and other AI experts.

The warming effect of anthropogenic greenhouse gases has been partially balanced by the cooling effect of anthropogenic aerosols. In 2020, fuel regulations abruptly reduced the emission of sulfur dioxide from international shipping by about 80% and created an inadvertent geoengineering termination shock with global impact.

Liberal democracies are today confronted with a wave of popular distrust in their ability to serve the majority of their citizens and solve the multiple crises that threaten our future. This threatens to lead us into a world of dangerous populist policies exploiting the anger without addressing the real risks, ranging from climate change to unbearable inequalities, or major global conflicts. To avert major damages to humanity and the planet, we must urgently get to the root causes of people’s resentment.

In its Order, the Court emphasizes that the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip which, as stated in its Order of 26 January 2024, was at serious risk of deteriorating, has deteriorated, and has done so even further since the Court adopted its Order of 28 March 2024.

Reporter ohne Grenzen (RSF) begrüßt diese Entscheidung. Sie gibt dem inhaftierten WikiLeaks-Gründer und seinem Anwaltsteam eine letzte Chance, seine Auslieferung zu stoppen. Assange ist in den USA wegen Spionage angeklagt. Ihm drohen bis zu 175 Jahre Haft. Ein Termin für die Berufung steht noch nicht fest.
